Heritage Day White Button Mushroom Skewers

Heritage Day is all about coming together to celebrate South Africa’s rich cultural diversity, and what better way to do that than with a flavorful braai! While meat often takes centre stage, veggies can shine just as brightly.
In this recipe, White Button Mushrooms are the star of the show, offering a meaty texture and rich umami flavour that will impress even the most dedicated carnivores.
These skewers are perfect as a starter or a side to your main meal. Easy to prepare, packed with flavour, and nutritious—this is one dish you won’t want to miss out on at your Heritage Day celebration.

Ingredients:

  • Metal skewers or bamboo skewers (soaked in water for 15 minutes if using bamboo)
  • 3 punnets of white button mushrooms
  • 1 red onion, quartered
  • 125 ml tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soya sauce
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup
  • Salt and pepper
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Fresh thyme

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Skewers:
    • Carefully thread the white button mushrooms and onion onto your skewers. You can leave the mushrooms whole or halve them, depending on your preference. The smaller size of button mushrooms makes them easy to grill and perfect for skewers.
  2. Make the Basting Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, soya sauce, and golden syrup until well combined.
  3. Grill the Skewers:
    • Place the mushroom skewers on the braai over hot coals. As the mushrooms start to caramelize and change colour, brush them generously with the basting sauce. Grill for a few more minutes until the mushrooms are cooked through and glazed with the sauce.
  4. Add Thyme for Extra Flavor:
    • For the last few minutes of grilling, place fresh thyme leaves on the coals to release their aroma and infuse the mushrooms with additional flavour. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Finish and Serve:
    • Once the mushrooms are cooked through and glazed with sauce, remove the skewers from the grill. Garnish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and more thyme if desired. Serve immediately as a starter or alongside your main braai dishes.

Why White Button Mushrooms?

White button mushrooms are not only budget-friendly, but they are also packed with nutrients like vitamins D and B, fibre, and antioxidants. Their neutral flavour allows them to absorb the sauce beautifully, and their size makes them perfect for skewering and grilling. Plus, mushrooms are low in calories and high in flavour, making them an ideal addition to any braai.
